The Firebird Gamelan Ensemble
The Firebird Gamelan Ensemble is a community group based in Lincoln
that meets regularly to learn and play the beautiful instruments
of the Javanese Gamelan music from Java, Indonesia A Gamelan is
a traditional, large, tuned percussion orchestra made up of drums,
giant xylophones and metalaphones along with large hanging Gongs,
flutes and stringed instruments that originates from Central Java,
Indonesia. Its played by up to 20 players and is traditionally used
to accompany dance and shadow puppet plays as well as entertaining
in the courts and palaces of Java.
We run regular evening workshops for individuals in Lincoln as
well as workshops and performances at festivals and events. The
Gamelan instruments may also be booked by groups of up to 16 people
for workshops with flexible times and dates available. In addition
to the community workshops, we also run national training days in
Gamelan music linking with other Gamelan groups accross the UK.
We welcome new members to drop in to the sessions and have a go
or join one of our courses. No previous musical experience is needed
and all instruments are provided. Its a great way to meet new people,
try something new, relax, learn about other cultures and develop
new skills.
Suitable for complete beginners and accomplished musicians! We
are looking for more members to join our performing group, so come
and give it a go! No words can describe the experience of seeing
and hearing these beautiful handcrafted instruments in real life.The
look and sound is unique, its enchanting, mesmeric and relaxing
to play and listen to.
