Indonesian Gamelan Music
Learn to play the unique instruments of the Javanese Gamelan used
in the temples and palaces of Java
Gamelan music originates from Indonesia and consists of a percussion
ensemble made up of large hanging Gongs, Metallaphones, (large iron
and bronze xylophones), drums and other ornately decorated and unusually
shaped Gongs as well as flutes and stringed instruments. It is traditionally
used in the temples and palaces of Java and often accompanies dance
and shadow puppet plays based on the traditional Hindu folk tales
of the Ramayana and Mahabharata. Participants will be introduced
to the cultural context of the instruments as well as learning to
play the instruments and a traditional Javanese piece.
This workshop can be combined with a shadow
puppet / storytelling workshop or dance
workshop to develop a piece for performance. Due to the communal
nature of the Gamelan it is an ideal activity to develop team work,
communication and listening skills as well as ensemble playing skills.
A continuation of the workshop may involve developing group compositions
or exploring minimalism, soundscapes
or a tool to develop cross-curricular
work eg geography, science, maths. If you host a residency of
the instruments at your venue, you could invite neighbouring schools,
groups to take part in workshops. Also Staff training workshops
including conferences available.
The instruments could be transported to your venue for a residency (ideal if you have several or more groups) or you could bring a group to the Gamelan based in Arnold, Nottingham. Please note that the
instruments are large and due to the time taken to move them this
is most suitable for residencies of 2 days or more. For individuals
interested in learning
about the Gamelan, we run evening courses/ taster sessions for
adults as well as performing group. please contact Art Beat for
further information.
